Phrase Flip vs Toucan: why we recommend whole sentences
For reading practice in a new language, we'd choose Phrase Flip. It translates whole sentences, keeps page text on your device for translation, and works in Safari on Mac, iPhone and iPad as well as Chrome.
Toucan is a reasonable choice if you mainly want to pick up vocabulary. It replaces individual words and short phrases, and includes saved words, quizzes and games.
This comparison is published by Phrase Flip. Our recommendation rests on those differences in features, not on evidence that one extension produces better learning results.

Why we'd start with Phrase Flip
You read complete sentences
A translated word inside an English sentence helps you recognise vocabulary, but the surrounding sentence still follows English word order. Phrase Flip gives you the whole sentence in your target language, so you can see how its words fit together.
For example, seeing the Spanish word libro in an English sentence introduces a noun. Reading Estoy leyendo un libro also shows how that noun fits into a sentence meaning "I'm reading a book." That is the kind of reading practice Phrase Flip is designed for.
You can hover over a translated sentence, or tap it on a phone, to check the original English. The intensity slider controls how many sentences flip. It does not simplify the sentences, so beginners may still need to check the English often.
We prefer that format for practising sentence reading. It is not a claim that Phrase Flip teaches grammar faster, or that word practice has no value. Neither extension replaces conversation, listening or structured study.
Page text stays on your device for translation
Phrase Flip translates on your device, requires no account, and has no extension analytics. That makes it a useful choice if you want to practise on the pages you already read without sending their text away for translation.
There are separate download and website disclosures: on iPhone and iPad, languages other than the included Spanish require downloads from Mozilla, which receives your IP address and selected language. The Phrase Flip website uses Google Analytics. The privacy policy explains these details.
Toucan's product pages do not establish an equivalent on-device translation guarantee. That alone does not tell us what happens to page text; read Babbel's privacy policy when comparing the two. Our reason for recommending Phrase Flip here is its stated handling of translation text.
You can use it in Safari, including on iPhone and iPad
If most of your reading happens in Safari, browser support settles the choice. Phrase Flip works in Safari on Mac, iPhone and iPad. Babbel lists Chrome and Edge as Toucan's supported browsers.
Phrase Flip also supports Chrome 138 or newer. Check the App Store requirements before installing the Safari version; support depends on your device and operating system.
When Toucan is the better fit
Toucan's word replacements leave more familiar text around each translation. You may prefer that if whole sentences feel too demanding or your immediate goal is recognising more words.
Its saved words, quizzes and games also give you ways to review vocabulary. If those features matter more to you than sentence reading, Toucan deserves a look. It is also the supported option of the two for Edge, and offers Hebrew and Hindi, which Phrase Flip does not currently offer.
Both products are available free, so price is not our reason for preferring Phrase Flip.
Our recommendation
Start with Phrase Flip if you want to read complete sentences during everyday browsing, want page text translated on your device, or use Safari. Those are concrete reasons to choose it over Toucan.
Choose Toucan if you prefer smaller vocabulary substitutions and built-in review activities. You do not need to reach a particular vocabulary count before trying sentences; use the Phrase Flip demo to see whether the format suits you.
